Bosnia and Herzegovina - A daytrip to Mostar from Dubrovnik!

From Dubrovnik, many companies offer daytrips Bosnia and Herzegovina and Montenegro. Its a really fantastic way to get a little taste of these countries, without committing to a full trip. I personally booked this daytrip when I got to Dubrovnik, but you can book these ahead online too. Its well worth it if you don't mind the early start!

One thing to note, is that the currency in Bosnia and Herzegovina is Convertible Mark. You'll definitely need to exchange some Euros in Dubrovnik at one of the many exchange places before you go, as its not always possible when you get there. You'll find your money goes a lot further in Mostar than in Dubrovnik (at least half the price) yey! Also, as the country is not within the Schengen area, so you'll need to have your passport handy for the border checks.

Mostar was a very friendly place with a safe feel to it! You get a guided tour of the cobbled Old Town area before having some free time to explore at your leisure. There is a huge bridge over a central river in Mostar which the local men used to traditionally jump off to impress the ladies (wow!). The food was really nice, lots of red meats with pittas and sauces type-thing. I'd say the closest comparison for me would be Turkish food (and its very cheap!). There's hills all around Mostar making it very picturesque with the old style buildings and greenery. 

As you many know, Bosnia and Herzegovina has had a difficult recent past. As much as the more touristic areas are beautiful and rebuilt, if you look closer you can see the damage to the city, particularly on the drive to Mostar. It is important to understand these conflicts as it gives you a more educated and rounded view on where the country is today, and where it is heading in future.  

Most daytrips will take you to the Kravice waterfalls on the way back from Mostar. Its a lovely little area, and you can swim or take a boat closer to the waterfalls. If I'm completely honest, not the most exciting waterfalls I've ever seen, but Its a great little break from the coach. You can get a drink in a café and watch the scenery once you've finished exploring the waterfall area.

In summary, If you get the chance, definitely get yourself on one of these day trips. Bring some tunes to listen to on the coach and look out of the window. I can safely say some of the best coach views have been from this trip! The contrast from Croatia to Bosnia and Herzegovina is quite apparent and its very interesting to see. Something special for sure.

As promised, here is part 2 of the Croatia adventure! Go and take a cheeky look at part 1 in Dubrovnik if you haven't already.  For some reason I hadn't booked my transport from Dubrovnik to Split until the day before I was due to leave, but thankfully It wasn't too challenging... a little stress is all part of the adventure... right? From outside Old Town Dubrovnik, there are lots of buses to the main bus terminal in Gruž. From here you can get transport to the rest of the country. Admittedly I didn't really realise that It was going to be a 4+ hour coach journey either (it looked closer on the map). Croatia (Dubrovnik) - Old Town & Island hopping

Croatia is an absolutely magical place , I was surprised how much I enjoyed it. There are endless unique little islands and sometimes I felt like I must surely be somewhere outside of Europe. Perfect for gorgeous views, island hopping, plus Game of Thrones fans can get their fix and see some of the filming locations! This trip is a week in total starting in Dubrovnik and ending in Split with a day trip to Mostar thrown in.   Flying into Dubrovnik airport , t here is a very handy bus run  by the Platanus travel agency  that goes straight to the Old Town  (Ploče Gate) or the main bus terminal in Gruž. You don't need to pre-book tickets, just go to the Platanus counter at the airport when you arrive, and buses harmonise with flight arrival times. Croatia now uses the Euro, which can bump up prices unfortunately, especially in touristic areas. Australia (Brisbane) - Koalas and the beautiful city

Brisbane is a fantastic city to visit as there's lots going on but it's still very beautiful and locals are friendly. Not to mention there are lots of places to visit nearby such as the Sunshine coast, Gold coast and little islands like Morton or Stradbrook. Such as the standard Queensland culture, everyone is up early with a coffee, off for a walk whilst the weather is at its most plesent.  A must visit for me is the Lone Pine Koala sanctuary in the outskirts of the city. You can catch the 430 bus there from the city which takes about 40 mins or pay to take a cruise down the river to the sanctuary. Lone Pine specialises in only Australian animals. Just as in the UK we might get a bag of food to hand feed goats or llamas, at Lone pine they have Kangaroo feeding. You really are able to get up and personal with the kangaroos, and many have babies in their pouches. When I was there I saw a Tasmanian devil!
